Who Can Be a CASA Advocate?


Volunteers are from diverse educational, cultural, and professional backgrounds. An Advocate is an individual who is at least 21 years of age and has successfully passed screening and 30 hours of training.

CASA Advocates: Who they are and what they do

A CASA Advocate is a person just like you, trained by CASA to protect a child’s interests throughout the judicial process. Advocates have an array of educational and professional backgrounds, and bring diverse experiences and interests to their volunteer duties. They do, however, share at least one characteristic – they want to help a child in need. A child who has been abused and neglected.

Volunteer Demographics

The responsibilities and duties of an Advocate is to:

  • Develop relationships with children who have been abused and neglected;
  • Investigate the child’s situation by talking to all parties in the case;
  • Advocate for the best interest of the child;
  • Attend court on the child’s behalf, submitting reports with recommendations for the case;

How do I become a volunteer?

All applicants interested in becoming an Advocate are required to:

  • Complete a written application containing information about educational background & training, employment & volunteer history, & experience working with children;
  • Submit the names of 3 references of persons unrelated to applicant;
  • Authorize CASA to secure a criminal background check;
  • Participate in a personal interview(s) with the Program Director;
  • Attend 30 hours of pre-service training & observe court;
  • Attend 12 hours of additional in-service trainings on an annual basis;
  • Commit to a minimum of 12 months of volunteer service;
  • Sign a Volunteer Agreement upon the completion of training.
